DVD'S AVAILABLE AT QLA LIBRARY

During the 2010 Team Meetings our staff will be showing various DVD’s to assist Personal Support Workers with their work. If you are unable to attend some of these meetings you can call QLA to make an appointment, during office hours (Monday-Thursday, 9.00am-3.30pm), to watch any of the DVD’s in our training room.

Please see below our current list of DVD’s:

  2. Hazards and Risks: ways to prevent them
  3. Duty of Care: awareness and commonsense
  4. Just Like You: a guide to etiquette and communicating with people with a disability
  5. Balance the Care: explores the major issues for people who provide care for others
  6. Time for You: respite services for carers in the area of Mental Health
  7. Untold Desires: sexuality and people with disabilities
  8. Managing Challenge Behaviour: addresses types of challenging behaviour; what is challenging behaviour; understanding behaviour; describing Aggressive behaviour; positive strategies; designing a positive program

These DVD's are available for Support Workers, Services Users and their families to borrow from our Library during office hours.

The book Book D-Stress: Building resilience in challenging times by Meiron Lees is now also part of our Library and is available to all Service Users and Support Workers who would like to read it.

CERTIFICATE IV IN DISABILITY WORK

Please see the information below regarding Ballinger Training Certificate IV in Disabilities:

  • 15 Units: each consisting of 4-5 subjects
  • Once a unit has been completed, students retain workbooks
  • Duration: 30 Weeks
  • Classes: 6 minimum - 12 maximum people
  • Reading: Every night, easily digested and familiar to support work
  • Location: meeting once per fortnight in Kuluin/Gympie
  • Cost: $3900 - negotiating for a lower price or Traineeship status (this price is subjected to change without notice)
  • Payment Plans: available from Ballinger
  • Note: If you have any qualifications over Cert. II you will not qualify for a Traineeship

FIRE BLANKETS AND BED SLIDE SHEET - FOR SERVICE USERS

QLA is offering to organise the purchase, delivery and installation of Fire Blankets and Bed Slide Sheets for any Service User who would like to have it available in their home. Please note the money to pay for this piece of equipment would come out of the Service User’s funding. If you are interested please call our office on 07 54439777.

Fire blankets: are made out of fire-resistant fabric and are used to put out flames that start from cooking or clothing fires. It is usually attached to the kitchen wall near the stove.

Bed Slide Sheet: are used for turning people with any mobility difficulties in bed or sliding up the bed. They can also be used when sliding people from a bed to any other mobility equipment.

 

THE COMPANION CARD

The ‘Companion Card’ is for people with a disability who need the support of an attendant or a support worker in order to participate in activities. Usually they have to pay for 2 admission fees – one for themselves and one for the support worker.

Companion Card holders are issued with a second ticket for their chosen companion at no extra charge. Organisations affiliated with the program absorb the costs associated with the companion ticket.

The introduction of the Companion Card program is being led by DSQ in partnership with the Dept of Communities. For more information call 13 13 04 - Monday to Friday, 8am-6pm or email cardservices@smartservice.qld.gov.au

 

LIBRARY & COMPUTER STATION AT QLA

We have turned our ‘Training room’ into a Library and a Computer Station for our Workers and Service Users. We have a range of books, DVD’s, CD’s & Videos are available for Support Workers, Services Users and their families to borrow from our Library during office hours. Some of our book titles include:

  • Beyond Sympathy
  • Surviving Acquired Brain Injury
  • Include Me In-Disability, Rights & the Law in QLD
  • Daring to Dream
  • Duty of Care: Who’s Responsible

We are currently accepting donations to our library of books, DVD’s, CD’s and Videos that are related to the disability sector.

If you are currently studying Certificate III or IV in Disability Work, Aged Care or any other course related to this area feel free to come to our office to use our resources to do your assignments. The Library/Computer Station is open Monday to Thursday, 9.30am-3pm.

QLA’S POLICIES AND PROCEDURES

Service Users and Support Workers are welcome to come to QLA to check our Policies and Procedures Manual which is located at our reception for your convenience. Office hours: Monday to Thursday, 9am-4pm. If you have any questions about our policies and procedures you can talk to the staff available in the office who will assist you with your enquiries.

 
DISABILITY CARD RENEWAL
All Personal Support Workers receiving a letter from DSQ with a Criminal Screening form are required to contact QLA to make an appointment with a staff member to renew their “Positive Notice Card” before it’s due to expire. You will be required to sign this form in their presence and show them two ID's (e.g.-drivers licence and Medicare card).
